AWARD YOURSELF
By

My secondary school is a dormitory school, and it was a culture that at the ending of each session, awards, presents, certificates are given to students who out performed others in different fields. Awards like best behaved student of the year, neatest student, best in any of the subjects the school offered and so many of them. And each year some group of students normally go home with this presents and awards. So I made it a point of duty to try my best and get at least one award or present, I try as much as I can to look good, I started behaving some how like a saint, keep to the school time schedule and so many of this stuffs and at the end of each year, I will proudly seat in the front row waiting for my name to be called. But truth be told, for three years in the school, I never received anything, no matter how hard I worked, or listened and waited in the front row.
So in my Fourth year, SS1. I made a personal decision that I must be awarded, either by the school or by myself. So I went and bought a present for myself, wrapped it and tagged it MOST COURAGEOUS STUDENT OF THE YEAR. That year I received a gift as the most courageous student of the year, presented by a student of the school “ me” in the school. Technically the school gave me an Award, wheather formal or informal is non of my business. I took the gift home and when ever I stare at it, I have this one smile that always reminded me of how it came about. It encouraged me. The year after that I was awarded the second best student in a particular course and ever since then, I receive not less than two or more awards at the end of each year up on till now.
The truth is that Most of us finds it difficult to appreciate their personal efforts, they work 24 hours a day with the only intent of pleasing others and waiting patiently for appreciations from whom ever they work for, some of which never came. This leaves them with anger, frustration and finally depression. That is why you see so many serious mean looking people at every corner of the street all through their lives, doing one thing “seeking appreciation”. From their work place, from their academics, from their play grounds, even in the church. But that is wrong, always find a resting spot to tap yourself at the back and tell yourself “congrats bro you did a nice job” . do it and keep moving on. It helps you to be relaxed and settled. it is different from being proud or blowing your own trumpet, it is just a way of encouraging your self to move on. Appreciate your self often And on.
An Igbo adage says “Ngwere si na elu oriji daa, kwee n'isi, si na oburu na onweghi onye tolu ya otoo onwe ya” meaning. A lizard fell off from an iroko tree, he looked round and no body praised him, he nodded his head in appreciation and said if no body appreciates me I will appreciate myself the fall wasn’t easy. Why don’t we all adapt this good spirit of the lizard and always appreciate ourselves. Say no to frustration and depression and yes to self appreciation. Once you have reach any of your goals celebrate it and set new ones. with this we create a better self.
