The feast is a relatively recent addition to the liturgical calendar, instituted in 1925 by Pope Pius XI for the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church. In 1970, its Roman Rite observance was moved from October to the last Sunday of Ordinary Time and thus to the end of the liturgical year.

Catholic Faithfuls in Ekwulobia and Oko Celebrate Christ the King Solemnity in Grand Style


Amidst the economic and social problems confronting Nigerians, thousands of Catholic faithfuls defied the distracting circumstances and thronged the various streets in Oko and Ekwulobia to demonstrate the Kingship of Christ.


At St. Joseph Cathedral, Ekwulobia, Bishop Peter Cardinal Okpalaeke thanked the Catholic faithfuls for participating in the Christ the King ceremony. He called on God to bless and keep the faithful.


Some faithfuls who spoke to Oko Poly Gist explained that the ceremony offered them the opportunity to demonstrate and prove their faith to the world. Furthermore, they explained that the Christ the King ceremony is a significant celebration in the Catholic Church.


It was all grand and colorful at the Convocation Arena of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, as Catholic faithfuls assembled to pray and celebrate the historic occasion. The different parishes in Oko, namely, St. Peter's, St. Augustine's, St. Anthony's, and St. Theresa's, were all in attendance with their musical instruments.


In an interview, some students of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, who spoke to Oko Poly Gist, thanked God for the gift of life to be part of the ceremony. They prayed that Christ the King would bring peace to Nigeria.


There were musical displays by various groups and associations from different parishes, as well as light refreshments. The ceremony ended with prayers and benediction services.
